Effects of Artificial Light On Wildlife - Bird Migration and Beyond

We had a very productive discussion at the January board meeting of the Easton Garden Club about the impact light has on birds and other wildlife. My quest for more information about light and this impact on the life cycle of wildlife and plants in our landscape led me to join a local Dark Skies working group which focuses on education and scholarly works with likeminded friends and experts. Each month we will share more info, especially about efforts to help birds avoid collisions with windows and buildings in our landscapes.

To get us started in this conversation, we offer the following links to help us better understand bird migration (timing and effect of light) and the Lights Out initiative from National Audubon. Both offer resources designed to increase our awareness about the impact of artificial light and small steps (or large ones) we may take to make a difference to our health and that of the wildlife in our landscapes.
